Whether you're just learning your camera or you’re trying to level up your lifestyle sessions, knowing your settings is key to capturing clean, beautiful images. As a Northeast Ohio photographer, I work in all types of light and weather—so I’ve learned to adapt on the fly.

If you're using a Canon DSLR or mirrorless camera (like the EOS R series or Rebel T7), here’s a simple guide to camera settings that work for lifestyle portraits, both indoors and outdoors.

Outdoor Photos (Golden Hour or Open Shade)

Best for: Family sessions, couples, seniors

  • Mode: Manual or Aperture Priority
  • Aperture: f/1.8 – f/2.8 for dreamy background blur
  • Shutter Speed: 1/250 or faster (kids need 1/500+)
  • ISO: 100–400
  • White Balance: Daylight
  • Focus Mode: AI Servo for movement, One Shot for still poses

Pro Tip: Watch your exposure. Backlighting? Bump your exposure compensation to +1 to brighten skin tones.

Overcast Days in Ohio

Best for: Softer light, moodier vibes

  • Aperture: f/2.2 – f/3.5
  • Shutter Speed: 1/200 – 1/500
  • ISO: 400–800
  • White Balance: Cloudy (adds a cozy warmth)

Overcast days = natural diffuser. You can shoot almost anywhere with even lighting!

Indoor Lifestyle Sessions

Best for: Newborns, cozy family moments, in-home stories

  • Aperture: f/1.8 – f/2.5
  • Shutter Speed: 1/160 – 1/320
  • ISO: 800–1600 (sometimes higher)
  • White Balance: Auto, or set a custom kelvin if mixing lights

Pro Tip: Stay close to windows and turn off overhead lighting to avoid mixed tones.

Low Light with No Flash

If you’re shooting after sunset, indoors, or in moody Ohio weather:

  • ISO: 1600–3200
  • Shutter Speed: Keep at 1/160+ for people, slower if using tripod
  • Lens: A fast prime lens like 35mm f/1.4 or 50mm f/1.8 makes a huge difference

Noise is okay—it’s better to have a sharp, grainy photo than a blurry one!

Photography doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with these settings, then adjust based on your scene. Trust your eye—and don’t be afraid to experiment! Whether I’m shooting a sun-drenched fall session in Mill Creek Park or an in-home newborn story in Youngstown, it all comes back to light and connection.
