Spring in Ohio: A Photographer’s Guide to Outdoor Portraits

Living in Ohio means never quite knowing what the weather will do next — but that’s part of the charm. Spring is especially magical here. After a long winter, everything starts to come back to life: the trees turn a vibrant green, flowers begin to bloom, and for the first time in months, we crack open the windows and let the fresh air in.

As someone who grew up in Florida, I’ve come to love the rhythm of the seasons here. Thirteen years later, I’m still in awe of how each one invites something new — especially for photography.

Over the years, I’ve shot countless spring sessions in Northeast Ohio, and I’ve gathered a few favorite tips for making the most of your outdoor portraits this time of year.

1. Choose a location that fits your vibe

The setting should feel like you. Whether that’s a lush park, a quiet trail, a charming downtown, or even your own backyard — choose a spot that feels natural and reflects your personality.

Want florals in your session? Check your local bloom calendar and try to book when nature is at its peak. (I keep a running list of my favorite seasonal locations — feel free to ask!)

2. Coordinate your outfits thoughtfully

Your clothing plays a big role in the overall feel of your photos. For spring, soft neutrals and pastels tend to photograph beautifully. Think flowy dresses, linen textures, and tones that echo the season — dusty blues, sage greens, creamy whites, soft pinks.

If you’re planning a group session, try to coordinate without matching too perfectly. Avoid overly bold patterns or anything that competes with the background. The goal is harmony — not distraction.

3. Bring props that reflect your story

Props can bring a little fun and personal flair to your session — but they don’t have to be complicated.

A cozy blanket for lounging in the grass.

An Easter basket for your littles.

A bouquet of fresh flowers.

A letterman jacket, guitar, or fishing gear.

Whatever feels you. Think of props as storytelling elements — not stage pieces. They should enhance, not overwhelm.

Final Thoughts

Spring is a season of new beginnings — it’s light, vibrant, and full of possibility. It’s the perfect time to step outside, breathe it all in, and make a few memories along the way.

And if you’re ready to book your own spring session? I’d love to help you capture this season of life, exactly as it is.
